Lourdes Pilgrimage: Send stressed employees on Lourdes style pilgrimages or retreats, say experts
Feeling stressed at work? Have you considered taking time out for a retreat or pilgrimage to Lourdes? Because this might be just what you need according to a recent study.
A three year study finds that religious trips to spiritual destinations or “emotional tourism” are effective at promoting the emotional well-being of employees by combating stress.
The study, conducted by scientists at the Universities of Lancaster and Strathclyde, concluded that going on pilgrimages and retreats can have many benefits for both mental and physical health.
They obtained their research by interviewing pilgrims in the Marian Shrine of Lourdes over the course of three years.
The scientist leading the study, Dr Leighann Higgins of Lancaster University, said to the Daily Telegraph:
“Our research is helpful because it can show how businesses can cultivate emotions to promote well-being, especially when society tells us these emotions should not be displayed or shared in public,” she said.
“Therapeutic servicescapes could be helpful for personal and/or company retreats or employee training to help with workplace stress, anxiety and mental health well-being.
“Religious landscapes have a unique foothold in the market, and it is likely that we will see demand for pilgrimages continue to increase.”
History of the Lourdes Pilgrimage
In 1858, Our Lady appeared to Saint Bernadette in a cave outside the small village in South-Western France. Now, each year, the Marian Shrine attracts 6 million visitors and pilgrims, because they wish to encounter the peace and healing that Lourdes gives.
The Oblate Lourdes pilgrimage travels to Lourdes each year. We accompany hundreds of volunteers and pilgrims of all ages and abilities to Lourdes, with flights departing Dublin, London, Manchester and Edinburgh. Please contact us for more information.
